This is where I went yesterday
Old Rag Mountain

EDITED TO ADD: If you look at one o'clock from Penny, you can just see the valley a couple thousand feet below where the parking lot is located. We hiked up the wooded part of the mountain below, then over, around, and through the rocks that make up the ridge line to the right. From the summit you go down a different trail that is still steep and rocky, but much easier than the approach side until you hit a fire road for the walk out. A staff or hiking poles strongly recommended for hiking the grades.

I loves me the rock scramble to the top. (Cornell Club of Washington hikes it twice a year, though I've only been on two or three of 'em.)

20 years ago I was all over every boulder. This time, me and the bionic leg stuck to the trail as being enough of a challenge.

I haven't been on any hike in VA that's as all-around rewarding as Old Rag. The only hiker that shouldn't love it is the pure solitude seeker.

I don't know what site she got it from, but Karen's info gave it six stars for views and the only zero stars rating for solitude.

I know the site, it is hikingupward.com . It is a great reference to find local hike information. Old Rag is the only hike that gets 6 for views AFIAK. The normal rating scale is 0-5.
