I learned something new today
Make that two things.

Today I learned that there is such a thing as an Eastern Hercules Beetle, and that they live in Northern Virginia. This one is a male I spotted chillin' under an SUV in the parking lot of INOVA Alexandria.

You can just see my coworker Carey's fingertip at the left side of the frame.

Carey wears a size 47/12 shoe for scale.

More than you may have wanted to know about the subject:

We have those! I found one very large, and later one even larger, female Hercules beetle on our property. (I have a photo of the large one crawling on my hand, with a quarter for scale.) Big hummers--almost all black, though one had a yellow undertone to black spotting on one side--with no horns (hence female.) We had no idea what they were, other than Really Big Beetles. :)

One of my coworkers rides horses a couple times a week. She said she sees them in the barn more often than she'd like (I get the impression one or more have flown at her after being surprised). Apparently, I've been hanging out in the wrong sorts of places.

Ours were non-aerial at the times we came across them, and showed no interest in flying. (I'm sure they'd be more intimidating in the air.) One of them showed up on our side door inside the storm door (somehow); the other I think I just found on the deck. Both were photographed and returned to the yard. :)

Based on the icon and the comment, I'm going to go with "Grossed out".

I'm not phobic about bugs, but I'm glad I've never run into one of these things. :P

Yes it is. I didn't know such a large beetle could live here. My latitude is 38 degrees North.
