I know there are some iPeople on my f-list so you’ll be pleased to know that the indoctrination of the next generation is well underway. To satisfy the requirements of the Virginia Tech School of Communications, I have just given my niece a check equivalent to a 17 inch MacBook Pro in the “High Level Computer for Film” configuration, plus an external hard drive, with a few bucks left over for a lock, bag, etc. Student loan debt is about the worst there is, so I’m doing my part to make sure she has as little as possible.

She's a smart kid, but my sister's family doesn't have a lot of money. She got some scholarships and grants, and my folks covered her tuition years ago through a state program that let you pay the then current rate for a state school while the student was still a baby.

The program my folks used is call VPEP (Virginia Prepaid Education Program). It looks like it still exists, though the enrollment period isn't open right now. It is one of four college savings plans available in Virginia:

You should probably check out the whole site to see if anything will be of benefit to you.
