Do the folks who work for Stanley Steemer have carpeting?
I have two dogs in the 60+ lb category, plus whatever the wife and I bring in on our feet and drop from our heads. I just spent over an hour running my consumer grade carpet cleaner upstairs and on the stairs themselves, and another 15 minutes cleaning the cleaner. It makes me think hard floors aren't such a bad idea after all.

And shag carpeting should never be used, anywhere.

Hard floors are The Best for life with dogs. (However, if the dog is elderly and/or not sure-footed, non-skid area rugs and runners may be in order.)

We have them all over. Those are fine because they can be cleaned or replaced easily. Wall to wall is a PITA.

Agreed. Our bedrooms and office are sorely in need of commercial deep-cleaning; our first attempt will be a rental unit from the hardware store.
