The wonders of modern medicine
I had two crowns removed today so I could get replacements. Anesthetics are so good I barely felt the shot and didn't feel any discomfort after that. Now I'm at home and about an hour into a Vicodin. I think my day is about done.

Can I ask why you had to have two crowns replaced?

Sure you can. First, they were seven years old--old enough that even my insurance was willing to kick in some money. Second, they were the result of an accident. My upper jaw was broken, number 7 disappeared completely, and 8 & 9 got pushed in a bit. The crowns were on 8 & 9 and the crown for 7 is on a titanium bolt. After seven years they were crowding each other and had to be redone.

I was not aware that crowns needed to be replaced due to age. I have had fillings replaced, but never a crown yet.

I remember the accident and your long recovery period afterwards. You are one tough guy, Dan.

How long crowns last depends on a lot of factors. The two front teeth as the result of an accident don't last as long as others.
I don't know about tough, exactly. Even if it gets sore some times, I'm pretty happy about still having my right leg. At almost any time or place in history a break like that would require amputation. Also I had insurance, a job waiting for me when I could work again, and incredibly supportive family and friends. Things could have been a lot worse.

You were obviously very fortunate. Thank goodness for that.
