Where this man hasn't gone (in a long time)
For the first time in several years, I am planning to see a movie in a theater. Star Trek, if you're interested.

Since I've been living in a cave for so long, does anyone have suggestions for preferred local theaters, websites to research show times, or any other useful information?

I'd go see it in Fairfax Corner or the UA Theatre at the intersection of 50 and Old Ox Rd in Fairfax. Both of those places use stadium seating, so there isn't really a bad seat in the house.

If you're crowd and line averse, spend the extra $1 to by the ticket online. Get there 20+ minutes early to get a good seat--near the isle, if you like. Sneak off during during work hours if you can. Don't let the snack bar cashier talk you into buying the large soda pop "for only a quarter more". But do support them. The theater only makes money from food sales. The movie studious keep (almost) all the ticket money. And while ticket sales have been up during the economic downturn, food sales have been way, way down.

For this particular movie (or others with comparably awesome SFX), I'd check for showings at the Udvar-Hazy IMAX--or failing that, the quasIMAX at P.Mills.

Since you're close enough, why not go see it in IMAX at Udvar-Hazy? :)
