From the Polanski petition
By their extraterritorial nature, film festivals the world over have always permitted works to be shown and for filmmakers to present them freely and safely, even when certain States opposed this.

WTF? Let's be clear on this:

He didn't uncover a massive government conspiracy to drug and sodomize 13 year old girls, he drugged and sodomized a 13 year old girl. He wasn't and won't be a political prisoner. I liked Chinatown and all, but I have no objection to him doing time.

I don't even know who most of these nitwits are. I was most disappointed to see John Landis went along with this.

John Landis has always been an asshole. Plus:

[T]he probable cause of the accident was the detonation of debris-laden high temperature special effects explosions too near a low flying helicopter leading to foreign object damage to one rotor blade and delamination due to heat to the other rotor blade, the separation of the helicopter's tail rotor assembly, and the uncontrolled descent of the helicopter. The proximity of the helicopter to the special effects explosions was due to the failure to establish direct communications and coordination between the pilot, who was in command of the helicopter operation, and the film director, who was in charge of the filming operation.

Good point. He could have easily ended up skipping the country to beat a manslaughter rap.

They DID prosecute him 30 years ago. And he bolted mid-process.

As jonfmorse already stated while I was asleep, they did prosecute him at the time. He became a fugitive to avoid sentencing. Polanski has remained outside US extradition until now.

Finding him was never a problem. He is a french citizen and they won't extradite a citizen to anyone.
They knew exactly when he would be in Switzerland and asked them to hold him.
