Is New Moon the new all-time chick-flick?
We have always measured a film's estrogen level as follows:
E = IMDbF - IMDbM
(Film estrogen = the average IMDB score from women minus the average IMDb score from men.)
New Moon is now sitting at a chickflickitude score of 3.7 (Female 7.2, Male 3.5).
3.7 is astronomical. We consider any score of one or higher to be a heavy-duty chick-flick. To give you an idea how high a 1.0 is, many estrogen-laden films narrowly miss the list. Gone With The Wind, White Oleander, An Affair to Remember, The Devil Wears Prada, The Women, Pretty Woman, The Harry Potter films and Fried Green Tomatoes all score in the range of .6 to .9. They are films which women like much better than men do, but they are not true hardcore chick-flicks.
Which films do make the list? Very few. The very elite. If you like them, you probably have a minimum of one vagina. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Legally Blonde score exactly one. Steel Magnolias scores 1.1. Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood and Mamma Mia come in at 1.2. Beaches and Waiting to Exhale each score 1.3. The first Twilight movie, Anne of Green Gables, and The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking score 1.4. Dirty Dancing was the long-time champ at 1.9, but was usurped in the past year by Sex and the City, which scores 2.2.
You can see from those numbers that a score of 3.7 is off the scale. In terms of what we have previously observed, it's equivalent to an earthquake measuring about 13 on the Richter scale - about the same as the (theoretical) impact which caused the extinction of the dinosaurs, a level which has not been duplicated in the past 65 million years or so. It represents roughly the total estrogen level of all 25 years of Oprah audiences added together.
Sidebar: the IMDb scores of New Moon are not correlated to age. I expected it to be a tweener chick-flick, but it is not. Every female age group scores it about the same. In fact, women 30-44 score it higher than teens, albeit by a statistically insignificant margin. Similarly, each male group scores it in the threes.
Sidebar 2: This sort of film does not make a good date film, because men despise it. Male groups score it utterly vomit-inducing scores in the 3s. This sort of disparity is likely to provoke arguments, not bonding. If you want to get a woman in the mood and also enjoy the film yourself, rent Amelie, which women like better than New Moon (8.8 versus 7.2 at IMDb), but men also love (8.5)
