My company has a leave system where we get our whole leave balance on the first of the year and must expend it all by the last (today). I've been in it for two years and I hate it. Today is a perfect example of why.
I used the last ten hours I'd been holding back on Monday and Tuesday morning. Today is a federal unscheduled leave day due to weather, but I have no leave and Leave Without Pay (LWOP) has to be turned on in advance and can only be taken in eight hour increments anyway, so I can't even just go in a bit late.
On top of that, due to our remote work location and most of the people in both my corporate and government chains of command being off, those of us who came to work last December 31st were forgotten and never told we'd been released two hours early. I sent a somewhat snarky email to my VP (my team lead is out and we don't currently have a PM) a few minutes ago on the off chance he could do something about any of this, and got an autoreply stating he was out until next week and would check his email then.
