Penny and I were out riding last night to drop her bike off to have some
farkles installed. It was in the upper nineties and we were stopped more
than we were moving because there are a couple long lights to get out of
We were sitting side by side waiting for a light to change when I heard
a loud POP and what I thought was water blew over and past me. I looked
over at Penny and saw a large puddle under her bike. The seal on the
hose that goes from the radiator down to the engine had failed at the
engine end. Hot radiator fluid blew across Penny's leg, then across me
and my bike. She was wearing a full riding suit and I was wearing 5.11
pants, mesh riding jacket, and modular helmet. I felt a bit of heat on
my arm and had droplets across my helmet and visor. My bike looked like
it had been rained on.
I never foresaw a scenario like that during a "to gear or not to gear"
discussion. If she had been wearing light pants or shorts, she would
have been scalded and dropped the bike, possibly knocking me over into
oncoming traffic. Same if I'd had skin showing. If I had been wearing a
half helmet I would have caught part of the spray with my face/eyes.
