A lovely place to fly
A while back, hellon2wheels bought me a gift certificate for a one hour flying lesson and today I finally used it at Freeway Aviation. Bowie, MD is a bit of a haul, but it is a beautiful place to fly since it is right next to Annapolis and the Bay Bridge.
It was a bit of sensory overload between the actual flying, the instruments, and the view outside. I had to have the instructor repeat part of his instruction because I suddenly noticed a screwpile lighthouse in Kent Narrows the main channel (further investigation has revealed it is the Thomas Point lighthouse) that I hadn't previously known existed. I took a couple pictures of the plane exterior when we got back, but none during the flight because I was too busy. It was a Cessna 172 BTW, with all the interior style of a late 60s VW bug, though upgraded with a Garmin MX20 color multi-function display which includes GPS navigation, traffic, terrain, and weather. As you can imagine, that device alone was a major distraction.
I don't plan to spend the time or money to get a license anytime soon, but I would like to do an introductory type flight again and am willing to go back there to do it. Anyone who knows how much I dislike Maryland as a state will be impressed by that.
Thank you, dear.

I seem to remember flying in Cessnas out of Leesburg, which should be closer to you? My memory is fuzzy though.

Well, you lived in Leesburg. The distances are similar. The traffic is better to Leesburg, I am more familiar with the area around Leesburg, and most importantly, it is in Virginia. The TravelZoo special was specific to Freeway. And it is a lovely place to fly. Once you get over the bay you can do pretty much what you want.

What I meant was that if I was remembering right, you could perhaps still fly again without having to enter a state you dislike. :) That sounds like a pretty awesome gift though.

I'd love to get my pilot's license, but thus far, haven't scraped up the time or money to take an intro lesson, to say nothing of scores of hours and thousands of dollars. :)
